United Airlines KILLED my 2.5 year old Mastiff, BamBam

On Aug, 28th, ‘12, on a flight from Miami to San Francisco, United airlines killed my 2.5 year old Mastiff, BamBam. United’s “Pet Safe” program guarantees that your pet will be in an acclimated, a/c equipped cargo facility or Pet Safe van to and from the plane. All other airlines require a Certificate of Acclimation to fly, only United does not because of Pet Safe. On the day we flew, no other airline would have allowed us to fly because of the extreme temperatures in Miami AND in Houston, only United because of their program and their guarantee that pets remain in an air conditioned environment at all times. Cargo facilities, vans to and from the plane, the cargo hold. They broke every promise they made to us.

We had a 3+ hour layover in Houston. Again, we could have flown an airline with a direct flight, but none of them offer the security, or guarantee of constant a/c that United offers. This is of paramount importance for a giant breed such as a Neapolitan Mastiff. After being seated in Houston for the San Francisco leg of our journey, watching out the window for the Pet Safe van, BamBam arrived on an metal closed sided luggage cart, not a van, looking hotter than we had ever seen him. My boy who was used to Miami temperatures. It was 97 in Houston on the tarmac that day. Outraged at the lack of a van and how hot he looked, but assuming he would cool down once inside the plane, and the airplane doors already locked, we watched them load him and we took off to San Francisco. Never, not once did it occur to me that he had been in that condition for close to four hours, since we landed in Houston.

BamBam was dead on arrival. My beautiful baby boy. We were told he must be sent back to Houston for an autopsy, and so began four dreadful weeks of corporate America denying responsibility, non information, ridiculous necropsy interpretations and insulting offers. Eventually United offered us a return of his flight costs, the cost of his necropsy/cremation and travel vouchers.

We have since found out from United employees that at no time in Houston was BamBam ever in a/c. He was removed from the plane, set under the wing on the tarmac until a luggage cart came for him. He was then transferred to a “USDA approved holding area with a cross breeze from open windows and fans” instead of the cargo area with a/c as promised. We have now been told in layovers of under 4 hours, NO animal is taken into the cargo area, only the “holding area.” Something we had never been told or accepted. No van would have been unacceptable, but no cargo area at the hight of summer? Outrageous. After 2+ hours he was put back onto a luggage cart and kept outside for another 40 minutes to travel 4 gates…until we saw him.

He never had a chance. We have now learned that every 9 days a pet dies on a commercial airline. Yet the airline industry holds all the cards. Almost zero regulation, accountability or informing of the public of the actual dangers of airline flight, even though his one way ticket was double my round trip. The airline and law consider him “luggage” and my recourse has been exactly that. In fact, only “pet” deaths are reported, not the hundreds of deaths of commercial animals, breeding pets, livestock, exotics, primates, etc. How can the public not be informed of this?

Unless you are prepared to take the exact same chance with your pet as with your bag, do not fly your pet on a commercial airline. The last words to me beautiful baby boy as I loaded him in the crate at the United cargo terminal, were,…

“Be a good boy, I’ll be back for you, I promise.” For 4 hours in a heat wave, as his body was closing down, as United’s “trained” personnel walked by and ignored his distress, is this what went through his mind? If he was just a good boy I’d be back for him.

United broke every single promise they made to us. They killed my baby boy and tried to buy me off with travel vouchers and a complete denial of any responsibility on their part.

Sign the petition below to have PetSafe Program policies changed to protect the animal and owner. This has happened to MANY pets. Something needs to be changed! Just because this story is a year old doesn’t mean it’s no longer important.

I traveled recently with a rabbit in the cabin, but many airlines only offer animals to be transfered via the cargo area.  To be met with this upon arrival would be horrifying.  Take a moment and sign, if nothing else. :(

[TW: Rape] “Roast Busters” Master Post

Here is a collection of all the things you should know about this sickening group of teenage gang-rapists that is causing a storm in New Zealand right now.

Please sign the petitions and spread this far and wide - getting it to Jezebel means we’ve already got some international attention. This incident has opened up the much-needed dialogue our country needs to be having about rape, and with mass public protest I’m hoping we will see some changes within the police force and our culture in general.

Hi guys. Right now in my home country New Zealand there is a huge battle going on with a group of teen boys who call themselves the roast busters. For the last 3 years this group has been going to partys, getting girls (some who have been underage) drunk and then having sex with them. In a lot of cases raping them. In the last 3 years 4 people have come foward saying that they have been raped. One of them was a 13 year pld girl who when interviewed by the police, was asked what was she wearing. The police are now saying that there is no evidence to comdem the boys in this group because no one is coming forward and there was no evidence in the case with th 13yr old. Bassicly the police and goverment are doing nothing. THIS NEEDS TO STOP. How can they expect girls who have gone through something like this to come forward when they’re treated like this. they’re asking girls to come forward and then blaming the girls fwhen they’re to scared to do so. I’m tryiing to get this out to the world and to get international  support to put all this to an end and bring justice to everyone involved. Please sign this petition to show your support and to help get our prime minister to grow some balls and step out and support his country, This will take you 3 seconds. Thank you. https://www.change.org/petitions/prime-minister-john-key-bust-the-roast-busters-and-show-you-take-sexual-violence-seriously#

WTF of the day: Yale treats rape like it is as on the same level as a minor plagiarism

So Yale just released a report on sexual misconduct complaints [PDF]. This document is full of fail, beginning with their bizarre refusal to call rape “rape”— they call it “nonconsensual sex.” Perhaps they thought using this euphemism would make the callous lack of evidence that the school finds rape to be a serious crime seem less terrible?

As you read on you’ll see Yale formally found sufficient evidence against 6 perpetrators of “nonconsensual sex” so far this year. Out of the 6 rapists, only 1 was being suspended—and only for 1 year! Four received “written reprimands” (similar to a punishment for “minor plagiarism”) and the last one was put on probation, which means there’s no action unless ANOTHER complaint is brought against him. So 5 out of 6 rapists remain on campus with no more than a slap on the wrist.

What makes this particularly infuriating is that Yale was under federal investigation for Title IX violations in 2011. It ended in an voluntary resolution agreement between Yale and the government. Looks like it isn’t being particularly effective, is it?

One of the complainants in the 2011 complaint encourages everyone who is as outraged as I am to email the person in charge of overseeing the complaint, OCR Region 1’s Thomas Hibino at thomas.hibino@ed.gov. Feel free to just copy and paste what’s below.

Dear Mr. Hibino,

I’ve just read Yale University’s most recent report on how it handles sexual misconduct. The school’s clear tolerance for sexual violence—handing out “written reprimands” for “nonconsensual sex,” with the worst punishment equivalent to that of minor plagiarisms—deeply disturbed me, particularly given the recent conclusion of your investigation. I am a campus survivor, and my trust in your office is greatly damaged by this continued abuse under your watch.

After you email, please reblog to spread the word. This is a troubling sign that the system as it stands is NOT making schools improve the way they handle sexual violence.

Russia: Gay teenagers tortured and made to come out on video by militant ‘anti-paedophilia’ group

I DON’T CARE WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON MY BLOG BUT YOU HAVE REBLOG THIS. I just don’t care. It’s time to boycott Russian Olimpics and don’t buy Russian vodka.

Here is a link to a petition asking to have Coca-Cola, Visa, Procter&Gamble, Samsung, and Panasonic pull their Sponsorship of the 2014 Olympics that will be hosted in Russia, where LGBT athletes, coaches, activists, and fans might not be safe.

Even foreigners can be arrested in Russia now because of Putin’s anti-gay laws.  This shit is serious and fucking archaic.  Not only that, but the built up homophobia and hatred that has turned to violence is just atrocious.

Queer Erasure in the Tag Searches

A lot of people are talking about the new tumblr regulations about NSFW content and that is really important but I’m personally more upset about the limitations on tag searches on mobile devices.

I can’t speak for what happens in the other tags, but the bisexuality tag is how the bisexual community on tumblr finds our own, and to have that stricken from mobile is insane.   Didn’t we just win a big victory with google?

Just because some people use these tags for porn is no reason to erase entire classes of people.  Oppressed people.  People who have already had their feelings and lives dismissed, ignored, and generally shat on.

Does anyone know of a petition we can sign or a formal complaint system??  I don’t want to take this lying down, but I don’t know what we should do.

This is something that is very troubling to us here at this blog.  We tag most of our posts with bisexuality and with only 5 tags to find an audience, we want our stuff to be found by the widest audience possible.

Also could we be labelled a NSFW or Adult blog for posting erotica reviews?  We’re very concerned for what this means for the bisexual and queer culture of tumblr.

Just like any other ham-handed one-size-fits-all solution, this one will most negatively impact already marginalized people.

- Sarah and Ellie

In addition to all of that….. The bisexuality tags are actually pretty tame. There’s not porn in there with the frequency of the bisexual tag. That one I could understand because it’s mostly porn and dirty blogging and propositions.

But the bisexuality tag has legitimate things in it. There are people who use their phone to access tumblr who can’t access otherwise, and now they have lost access to this community.

Hey I made a petition!

I’ll fix it up a bit more later. If anyone wants to help out/add stuff message me k?
So let’s all sign and reblog!

Signal boost!

I also want to express my shock that the bisexuality tag is on the nsfw list along with some of the other lgbtq tags. The bisexual tag deserves to be on the list because fetishising porn blogs keep pumping it with nsfw content (the gay and lesbian tag also doesn’t suprise me because last time I was in the bisexual tag the porn was also tagged with gay and lesbian), it’s unfair but it’s a fact that refuses to go away so I can see why they were removed. But to this day I have not seen anything remotely nsfw in the bisexuality tag, not even a dirty conversation. And it’s not as if it’s flooding with posts either (well, not from people who are not trolls anyway), so it’s not as if we wouldn’t notice nsfw content in the bisexuality tag.

I also checked out the homosexual and pansexual tags, and unlike the bisexual tag which has porn every 3 posts on average, the most nsfw thing I could find was a selfie of someone in their bra and that was one in hundreds of posts.

Seriously tumblr, why the hell are these tags flagged?

Not to mention I got a real whiff of microagressive homophobia from the homo tag, who seem to have people spamming it with pictures of Justin Beiber (haha I get it, you called him gay in the tags, so funny and original).

I havn’t had a good look at the other tags yet but this has fuckery written all over it.

Signal boost. This is fucking outrageous.

Two Alabama high school students launch a petition to repeal a state law which requires public sex education to teach students that homosexuality is criminal. The Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex sodomy laws are illegal, but that has not stopped the message from being enforced in sex education. “Telling students that being gay is a crime is not only wrong, it’s unconstitutional according to our nation’s highest court”, states the petition. To date, it’s received 93, 836 supporters, over half the required signatures.

Drop charges against my son Tremaine, who was attacked by police while holding a puppy

My son Tremaine was horsing around with one of his friends when the police showed up on ATVs. Tremaine was holding a newborn puppy in one hand and a bottle in the other. The police asked him where his mother was, and he turned to walk toward me. That’s when the police pounced on him, threw him to the ground, injuring our puppy and choking Tremaine so hard he urinated on himself.

More Black youth getting attacked by police. Please sign.

Otago University: Fire Rex Ahdar for his homophobic remarks

Not only is Rex Ahdar’s ‘opinion piece’ offensive and derogatory, it is also rife with misinformation and statements with zero scientific support (for example, “They [gay couples] lack the inherent structure to rear well-rounded, psychologically secure children.. I, personally, would be horrified to be taught at a prestigious university by someone who is so clouded by his own bigotry that he would write such an illogical, nonsensical and oppressive piece to a national newspaper.

Petition: CNN Apologize for your disgusting coverage of the Steubenville Rapists

While reporting on the verdict and sentencing of the two Steubenville rapists, the CNN news personalities told us repeatedly how difficult it was to watch these boy’s lives being destroyed. How their crime will haunt them.

These criminals destroyed their own lives, when they decided to repeatedly rape an incapacitated girl. When they decided to film and share their horrific crime.

Not once did CNN mention the person whose life was most destroyed by their crime, who will also be haunted for life by their crime… their victim. The young girl who they violated and raped.

Not once while they discussed the pain and humiliation these vicious and cruel criminals now face, did they acknowledge that her life was also destroyed, by them. That she would have to carry around the pain, humiliation, self doubt and self loathing, the stigma of rape, for the rest of her life. Not once did the CNN pundits mention the pain and humiliation these criminals repeatedly inflicted on their victim.

Not once.

The media, and it’s personalities have a huge rule to play in shaping public opinion and public perception. With that role comes an equall responsibility to ensure they use that role for the good of society.

CNN’s coverage of that story failed to meet that responsibility. Failed miserably. The on air personalities did nothing more than promulgate rape culture in America. A culture that leads to someone being raped or sexually assaulted every two minutes.

Every Two Minutes.

CNN, We are sure the 97% of rapists who will never spend a day in jail appreciated your sympathetic coverage of these two criminals.

The rest of us did not. We demand an on air apology for your disgustingly biased coverage. Further, we demand that you use your position as a premier news network to focus on changing rape culture in America. Devote an hour long, prime time segment to rape, it’s victims, what can be done to prevent it, and how to change the culture that gives rise to this violent crime.

This woman is a law graduate, a paralegal, a human rights campaigner, a model, and most importantly a human being. She was murdered by her Paralympian boyfriend, and Britain’s most popular newspaper runs this as its front page, refuses to use her name and instead refers to her as the man’s ‘lover’.
Fuck you if you don’t think sexism is still a thing. Fuck. You.
