If I was to steal a chocolate bar because it was sitting at the counter looking all tasty, it’d be theft. Nobody would say but oh, look at the creamy picture on the packaging. It was taunting him. He had no choice. It was instinct. Impulse. Drives and desires beyond his control.

If I walked into some person’s home and said I lived there, I’d be arrested. Nobody would say to the owners that they should invest in curtains so that people couldn’t see how nice their house was so easily. Nobody would tell them that they were ‘asking for it’

And if I beat a guy up because he was a loud mouth I’d be charged. Nobody would say oh but look at him, he’s a dick. He’s got gel in his hair and he’s wearing a shirt that says “How about a nice cup of shut the fuck up”. The dude is a wanker, he got what he deserved. More importantly, even if they did say that, it wouldn’t effect my charges.

But if a woman is wearing a short skirt then it will dramatically sway people’s opinions in a rape case. Was it cut above the knee? Was your waist showing? These are serious questions that will be asked in a court case.

BOOM. FUCKING BOOM.

iamabutchsolo:

Take a facet of crime, and then look at television shows/movies that feature those criminals as protagonists.

White mobs.

White pirates.

White serial killers.

White political corruption

White drug dealers

I mostly want to talk about this as a TV phenomenon, but pick a crime, any crime, and Western media has probably made a movie/TV series/play/etc. with a white person that romanticizes the criminal activity. No matter what, a white person can do whatever terrible crimes and still have a TV/movie fanbase that loves them.

When you see black or brown people committing crimes on screen, you are to see them thugs and criminal masterminds and people to be beat down.

When you see white people committing crimes on screen, you see a three-dimensional portrait of why someone might commit that crime, how criminals are people too, and how you should even love them for the crimes that they commit because they’re just providing for their families or they’ve wronged or they’re just people and not perfect. This is particularly a luxury given to white male characters, since there few white female criminals as protagonists.

If and of the above shows were about black or brown folks, there would be a backlash of (white) people claiming that TV and movies are romanticizing criminals and are treating them too much like heroes and that it will affect viewers and encourage violence and “thuggish” behavior. And yet fictional white criminals get to have a deep fanbase who loves these white criminals, receive accolades and awards, get called amazing television that portray the complexities of human nature. Viewers of these characters see past the atrocious crimes and into their humanity, a luxury that white characters always have while characters of color rarely do. The closest that mainstream TV has come to showing black criminals as main characters is probably The Wire, and even then, the criminals share equal screen time and equal status as main characters as the police trying to stop them.

The idea that crime can be so heavily romanticized and glorified to such a degree is undoubtedly a privilege given to white characters. The next time you hear someone talk about Dexter Morgan or Walter White in a positive way, it may be an opportunity to rethink how white people can always able to be seen as people no matter what they do, while everyone else can be boiled down to nothing but a criminal.

Except you are so daft, it’s not even remotely amusing.

The USB key was essentially developed by a computer whiz to store data, information and other software in a mobile source from one computer to the other. The slasher you see up there was created to cut open solid objects like boxes, ropes, etc but to also carve and slice inanimate objects. The lighter you see up there was made for cigarettes. The first three objects have domestic, legitimate use.

The gun, in contrast, has no other domestic objectives and usage. It was specifically made to kill. That is all. Kill. You don’t use a gun to store software programs, you don’t use a gun to peel an orange, you don’t use a gun to light a cigarette up. You use a gun to kill.

Try another comparison. Stop embarrassing yourselves.

^ THANK YOU! Even more so with assault rifles. Gun-nuts arguably have an explanation for some guns - hunting - but their is NO REASON to own an assault rifle except to shoot a person with it.

There is a lot of push back from women who claim to be feminists but don’t believe race is part of the conversation. I’ve seen impassioned arguments and explanations as to why the two things must be talked about together. It never fails to end with the faux Feminist saying that the person explaining is just trying to hijack the movement. Which means, in the eyes of the faux Feminist, the person speaking is not a woman. I am going to show you, in numbers, in black and white (Literally) why if you believe intersectionality is not something that needs to be addressed, you are wrong.

The following is from a nationwide statistical study done in 2008. It came from this website and more specifically from this file. For the really lazy (and in denial) of you, I’ll even tell you exactly where to look for my numbers: Table 30.

Crimes of Violence

  • White Female-30.3
  • Black Female-59.0

Rape/Sexual Assault

  • White Female-28.9
  • Black Female-76.4

Robbery

  • White Female-42.3
  • Black Female-63.8

Aggravated Assault

  • White Female-32.5
  • Black Female-56.6

Simple Assault

  • White Female-28.5
  • Black Female-54.0

Simply put, if you are telling us now, when we are getting almost double the crimes committed against us, that we need to “Wait our turn,” what reason would we have to believe that once you get your justice, you will come back for us?

Now is the time. Helping those at the bottom, by default, will help you. How and why would anyone ever argue against it?

[Edit] The numbers represent that actual crime rate. Not the total number of people affected in any given group.

YES. I have seen this picture going around. Do people really think the media is underreporting crimes committed against white people? Really? For fuck’s sake. Excellent response here. If I were you, I would keep posting it over and over again until she deletes the picture. -Jess

I agree. The response is brilliant. How does someone not understand that? Worse, how does someone reject that information after having it provided to them in such a rational manner? urgh.

I just sent this to my mum. There was a news item about Trayvon the other day and after it finished mum decided to bring up the story of the two white tourists murdered by the black teenager. This is what I tried to explain to my mum, that there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE. She was all like, “oh yes I agree, but it’s not just white people killing black people, it goes both ways.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love my mum to bits, but after becoming so aware of this institutionalized racism, it’s hard to be tolerant of ignorance.

Oh, and I totally understand the frustration of putting up a polite, rational, cogent argument to something a facebook friend posts, and them deleting it. Personally, I find it as one of the rudest and most insulting things you can do. They have DELETED your opinion, your say. It infuriates me.

"[TW: rape] A lubricated vagina does not mean that a woman consents to sex. Having a lubricated vagina is not an invitation to penetrate it. An orgasm does not mean consent. An orgasm is a physical response to stimulation of genital organs. An orgasm is not a crime. Rape is. Not wearing any underwear does not mean that a woman consents to sex. Not wearing any underwear is not a crime, rape is. Being drunk or stoned does not mean consent to sex. In fact, being drunk or stoned prevents you from giving consent. Sending someone naked photos of yourself does not mean consent to sex. Taking off your own clothes does not equal consent. If you are afraid for your life, or afraid of violence, and take of your clothes because you think it would be safest thing to do in the situation, you have not given your consent. You have been forced. The sexual positions that are taken up in a rape do not mean consent. Submitting to a particular sexual position after being forced into sex is not evidence of anything. Being a lesbian does not mean consent to sex. Being a lesbian does not mean you need to be shown what you are missing. Sexual orientation is not a sexual invitation. Being a wife, or a husband, or a daughter, or a son, does not mean consent. Rape happens in marriage, domestic partnerships, between ex-partners and between family members."

  1. How many years do you consider to be a fair prison term for a woman who has an abortion?
  2. How many years for a doctor who performs one?
  3. Will the punishments be greater the second time around?
  4. Where will the state get the money necessary to prosecute one-third of all American women for this crime?
  5. Forty-two percent of women who have an abortion have incomes below 100 percent of the federal poverty level (that’s $10,830 for a single woman with no children, if you’re counting). When women are forced to have children they cannot afford to raise, will those children become wards of the state or simply new Medicaid recipients? Where will the state find the money necessary to support them?
  6. Will you be willing to watch your wife die in front of you when her life is threatened by an unsafe pregnancy that no one is allowed to do anything about? Your daughter?
  7. Will rapists have to pay child support to women who are forced to have their children?
  8. Will the child of incest be in the custody of its rapist father or the father’s teenaged daughter, his mother? In fact, 18 percent of women who have an abortion in America are teenagers. Will they be required to drop out of high school to raise their children or will the state provide free childcare?
  9. Will upper-class white women be prosecuted as vigorously as other women who have abortions?
  10. You are aware that upper-class white women have abortions, aren’t you?
