Sometimes it’s easy to think that the religious zealots only exist in the US, because all of my religious friends and family are wonderful people whose beliefs do not impose or impact on my life. But this just brings it all back: what many, many Christians are actually saying. I am nearly crying after reading this thread. I am just so disgusted. Here’s what these Christians have to say about gay marriage being legalized in NZ:

This really pisses me off, and I mean really. Not just the general intolerance going on, but that fact that it’s accepted to hide behind religion. You can say “I don’t like this because it’s against my religion” and be a fucking asshole about it. We shouldn’t have to legalize gay marriage because it should already be legal. Love is blind. Love doesn’t care about gender. And you know what else love doesn’t care about? The ignorant people around it. Don’t like gay marriage? Don’t fucking get one.

Listen, coming into a conversation where people are complaining about a group doing oppressive things and crying “but we’re not all like that” is like coming into a discussion where PoC are complaining about racist shit white people are doing and completely derailing the conversation to make it about your hurt fee-fees and assuring the PoC that YOU’RE not like that though!!. Look, we GET IT that not all Christians are homophobes. Did you even read the beginning of my post? I have many, many Christians in my life who are just as keen as me for gay marriage to be legalized. My post did not indicate anywhere that I am of the view that all Christians hate gays.

Instead of getting all hissy about a post that you think is attacking your religion, how about you challenge these bigots instead? THEY’RE the ones who are making your religion look shitty. To make a snarky post directed at ME is basically saying “It matters more to me that someone is criticizing my religion, than the fact that my religion is being used as a tool of bigotry, hate and oppression.”

If you are going to stay silent in the case of oppression, and only speak up when someone else says something about the oppression, you are an enabler of the oppression to happen. Get over yourself that someone is criticizing the negative impacts of religion, and actually consider thinking, “wow, she has a point, maybe I should do something about this”. 

If you are such a great ally, challenge your fellow Christians who are spreading hate. Don’t challenge the person who is making you aware of that fact.
