Casual anti-Semitism is believing there’s no valid reason to circumcise a child.

Casual anti-Semitism is acting like circumcision is on the same level as female genital cutting.

Casual anti-Semitism is calling circumcision “mutilation.”

No.

Disagreeing with cutting the genitals of a child who has no capacity to choose it for him/herself… is anti-Semitic? Christians do it, too. Is it okay to disagree with a Christian then?

There are more cultures and religions who perform circumcision besides christians and jewish individuals. If it’s not your culture, you don’t get a say in it. The most you can do is not do it to your own children. That’s all.

life-tbd I usually agree with everything you post but I have to state my disagreement here. I don’t believe that people should be immune from criticizing something just because it’s part of someone’s ‘culture’ (but of course this shouldn’t be an excuse for all the racists and cultural appropriators). It’s just… a lot of things can be passed as ‘culture’. And sometimes those things violate human (/animal/environmental etc) rights. I believe it is more important to fight for human rights than it is to be hush-hush about another’s culture. For instance, I have signed quite a few petitions against ritual animal slaughter that still goes on, and one could easily say that it is none of my business because it is a cultural thing, but to me, those animal’s lives are far more important than any ritual or tradition.

And in this case, male circumcision, I have done quite a deal of research about the negative effects of it (I used to believe that female circumcision was barbaric but there was nothing wrong with male circumcision). If you’re interested I’ll happily pull up some of the facts about MC and why I am so opposed to it. Because I care far more about bodily autonomy than what some stone-age book instructs us to do. I don’t believe it is enough to just refrain from doing it to my own kids. There is a lot of misinformation out there about MC, even coming from medical institutions, and I am going to challenge it. It doesn’t matter if the person advocating for circumcision is a white American who just thinks the penis looks better that way (although caring about the aesthetic of their baby’s penis is fucked up to me: let the child make the decision themselves when they are older) or a Jewish person who is doing it as part of their culture.

I’m sorry to disagree with you on this, but it is something I feel quite strongly about. I got into an argument a year ago in my Religious Education class with some privileged white girls about FGM. They were using the excuse “but it’s just part of their culture”. No, I’m sorry, I don’t buy that argument. If anyone else strapped down a human being and tried to mutilate their genitals and tried to claim it as ‘culture’ or ‘tradition’, that wouldn’t fly with me either. My disapproval of MC has nothing to do with the fact that it is a Jewish tradition.

“Casual anti-Semitism is believing there’s no valid reason to circumcise a child.” There IS no valid reason. But does that mean I am automatically labelled as hating and distrustful of Jews??

Edit: Here is another really good reply to the OP that I might as well include here.

If somebody today strapped me down as an adult to a table and took a knife to my genitals without my personal consent, they would be arrested, and convicted of serious sex crimes, and sent to prison.

So…

Why would this be any different if someone had done this to me when I was a baby?

Hell, even doing that to a teenager or even a child has gotten people in trouble, if it was non-consensual. But hey, babies can’t talk, so it’s totally fine to do it to them!

Y’know, I’ve never thought of it that way. That is fucked up.

People who understand words like “cissexism”, “Pascal’s Wager”, “racial profiling”, “ableism”, “rape culture”, “check your privilege”, “strawman argument”.

People who know who Rick Santorum,Trayvon Martin, Bell Hooks, Carl Sagan, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali are.

People who I can ask questions like, “What do you think about male circumcision?” and “Isn’t Kirk Cameron hilarious?” to.

Is that too much to ask? :(
