"You don’t need religion to have morals. If you can’t determine right from wrong then you lack empathy, not religion."

"‎I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."
— Sister Joan Chittister, Catholic Nun (via timehasflewn)
"A three-day-old human embryo is a collection of 150 cells called a blastocyst. There are, for the sake of comparison, more than 100,000 cells in the brain of a fly. The human embryos that are destroyed in stem-cell research do not have brains, or even neurons. Consequently, there is no reason to believe they can suffer their destruction in any way at all. It is worth remembered, in this context, that when a person’s brain has died, we currently deem it acceptable to harvest his organs (provided he has donated them for this purpose) and bury him in the ground. If it is acceptable to treat a person whose brain has died as something less than a human being, it should be acceptable to treat a blastocyst as such. If you are concerned about suffering in this universe, killing a fly should present you with greater moral difficulties than killing a human blastocyst."

Just an observation from an ex-christian.

Brilliant.  :)

"It is often argued that religion is valuable because it makes men good, but even if this were true it would not be a proof that religion is true. That would be an extension of pragmatism beyond endurance. Santa Claus makes children good in precisely the same way, and yet no one would argue seriously that the fact proves his existence. The defense of religion is full of such logical imbecilities."

No. You had sex with a girl when you were a child. It ended in pregnancy. You are attacking the morality of a 14 year old girl who terminated a pregnancy that would have resulted in a child that neither you or her had the capacity to care for. A girl that preserved your and her own youth, and stopped a child being raised in circumstances that are not fit for any child. You really should be assessing your own morality. What kind of 14 year old boy fucks a 14 year old girl, without protection, gets her pregnant and then runs an online smear campaign against her for doing what was best for her, her family and you? What? You think you had the capacity to raise a child at age 14/15? How would you feed it or look after it? You wouldn’t. You were going to dump it on her or your own parents, live like the carefree little shit you are and occasionally play with the child when you could be bothered and think “Wow, what a good, brave young father I am.” You made the mistake, she went through the trauma of saving your youth for you. You owe her so much better than this. You absolutely disgust me. Less than forward-slash three, you’re real fucking remorseful. That’s poetry that is. You’re breaking my heart kid. That girl should have every right to decide what she wants to do to her body. The idea that you should take responsibility and give birth implies that you are responsible to this fetus and you owe it something. A pregnant person does not owe a fetus anything any more than they owe you an apology for being alive. Try again, pro lifers. Pro-Choice.

I applaud this.

^ YESS.

This is some sterling commentary.

This dumbass is also probably assuming the fetus was male. The sex is almost never known when an abortion takes place because it is early on into the pregnancy.

Wonder if he’ll grow up thinking if he buys a woman dinner, she owes him sex.

Atheism makes me sad. #photoadayapril #atheism #atheism (Taken with instagram)

Oh joy.  A new meme displaying ignorance to about atheism.  Atheism is the lack of belief in a god.  Nothing more, nothing less.  It does not necessarily say that there isn’t a god, it merely states that the atheist does not personally believe in one.

Beyond that, this talks of gross misrepresentations of what many atheists believe.  To say that the universe has no order is silly, as order readily apparent everywhere and we could not exist without it.  To say that the universe is reasonless and purposeless may be true, but that is not to say that individuals cannot find their own reason or purpose for existence.

The questions of morality are simply moronic and speak much more of a nihilist philosophy than an atheist.  As evidenced by crime rate statistics, atheists by and large have a much stronger sense of morality than most theists.

As for “produces the ultimate emotional articulation of self-centerdness which is fearfully bent towards the cover up and suppression of belief in an ultimate personal cause who brings order, purpose, and judgment to all things”, I think this is badly saying that atheists actively deny and cover-up the fact that they actually do believe in a “personal cause” (i.e. god?).  This is almost inarticulate nonsense based that could only be stated by someone who hasn’t a clue as to what brings about the loss of faith in the first place.  There is no evidence for a god, and there is strong evidence against the major events claimed in books talking about god’s existence.

In short, this is a display of grotesque and insulting ignorance toward atheists everywhere.

~ Steve

What an obnoxious little picture. Kudos to Steve for once again stripping it down to the BS it is.

"The greatest tragedy in mankind’s entire history may be the hijacking of morality by religion."
— Arthur C. Clarke (via fuckyeahsexyatheists)
"If we reject Deuteronomy and Leviticus (as all enlightened moderns do), by what criteria do we then decide which of religion’s moral values to accept? Or should we pick and choose among all the world’s religions until we find one whose moral teaching suits us? If so, again we must ask, by what criterion do we choose? And if we have independent criteria for choosing among religious moralities, why not cut out the middle man and go straight for the moral choice without the religion?"

OMFG OUT OF CONTEXT. YOU HAVE TO READ TEH WHOLE BIBUL. IT WAS THE CULTURE OF THE TIME. HJKHLDFJKGHLDKJG
I love how Christians suddenly become wishy-washy liberals when these parts of the Bible come up.
Yeah and then they claim that we should base our morality on the Bible and ask where atheists get our morality from.
My question is if morality comes from god and the Bible is how he communicated that morality to us, what moral principles are we mere mortals supposed to use to determine which parts of the Bible to ignore?
Slavery is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact the Bible is totally cool with slavery.
Misogyny is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact the Bible is totally cool with mysogyny.
Genocide is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact god ordered numerous horrific genocides.
Human sacrifice is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. Ever read the story of Jephthah? (Judges 11:31-39)
etc…
