Anon asked:
This is honest to God (Haha, Irony) curiosity, not an attack or anything, and I’d like to remain anon. How is Jesus saying that all the past laws are invalid bullshit?
Because Jesus makes it ABUNDANTLY clear in many passages that all of the old laws still apply. This is an excerpt from a website called evilbible.com. While this is, admittedly, a biased site. Nevertheless, the passages are there for everyone to see.
1) “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be abided by until the end of human existence itself. None other then Jesus said so.
2) All of the vicious Old Testament laws will be binding forever. ”It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.” (Luke 16:17 NAB)
3) Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn’t the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament. ”Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17 NAB)
3b) “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB)
3c) “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.” (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)
4) Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law. Mark.7:9-13 ”Whoever curses father or mother shall die” (Mark 7:10 NAB)
5) Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment: “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” (Matthew 15:4-7)
6) Jesus has a punishment even worse than his father concerning adultery: God said the act of adultery was punishable by death. Jesus says looking with lust is the same thing and you should gouge your eye out, better a part, than the whole. The punishment under Jesus is an eternity in Hell. (Matthew 5:27)
7) Peter says that all slaves should “be subject to [their] masters with all fear,” to the bad and cruel as well as the “good and gentle.” This is merely an echo of the same slavery commands in the Old Testament. 1 Peter 2:18
8) “Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19) and “For the law was given by Moses,…” (John 1:17).
9) “…the scripture cannot be broken.” —Jesus Christ, John 10:35
Three shelves of Bibles. Three shelves of the exact same book with different color packaging.
Two shelves of Science books, and nearly half of them are Complete Idiot’s Guides to whatever science they’re about.
One shelf for all of Astronomy and Physics.
Not quite one shelf of Philosophy.
And what about Darwin’s Origin of Species? Out of stock.
If you don’t understand the problem with this, then you are the problem.
The problem with peaceful, kind, religious people promoting their holy texts, is that they’re still promoting their holy texts.

Coexist?
It’s a nice sounding idea.
I mean, what could be wrong with wanting to live side by side with everyone of different religious faith? No arguments. No confrontations. Just agreeing to live and let live, let bygones be bygones, and several other cliches.
And it WOULD be fine, except…
You see, part of the principles that guide many religions is the desire to spread the word.
And, as religions are often defined by the moralities they profess, there is a strong tendency among these religions to get these moralities encoded into laws that affect everyone.
This makes coexistence difficult, to say the least.
But even putting this aside. Even if the respective faiths keep to themselves, there are problems. Try a Google search on “secret prisons for teens.”
One could argue that coexistence means not interfering with the religious practices of others, and therefore we should just ignore this kind of thing. We should let parents whose religion dictates against medical intervention with children let their children not receive proper medical care when very ill. We should let parents repeatedly tell their children that they will go to hell if they don’t behave, to undergo fasting, to be beaten in accordance to someone’s interpretation of scripture.
To stand aside and do nothing while abuse takes place is to take the side of the abuser. This, to me, is unacceptable. Abuse cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, regardless of faith.
So, for your average Christian or Muslim or Mormon family down the street, odds are coexistence is probably fine. But for too many others…? If your religion teaches hate…if your religion teaches blatant falsehoods (creationism) to susceptible minors…if your religion condones abuse…
No, I can’t coexist with that.

To the person that claimed Christians aren’t supposed to do what the Old Testament says, your boy Jesus disagrees:

this.
Bit of a generalization when taken as a whole, but all believers are represented in parts of this. Even me when I was at my most liberal and accepting can be found here. ~ Kim
The phases of arguing scripture with theists. ~ Kim
In addition to all the various reasons I’ve listed here for why I hate religion, I’m adding everything on this meme. I’m pretty sure I’ve already covered everyone of these here since these things all happened, or were reported on within the 6 months of me running this blog. This is why I will not respect your religion. I will respect you, I will love you, I will live and work amongst you as I always have. I won’t treat you badly because you are a person of faith because that’s not my intention. I will however NEVER fail to highlight the evils in this world bred and supported by those who act according to their interpretation of religion and religious texts.
The very fact that some theists can say that this is not what their religion is about, while others can defend this kind of behavior using the same scriptures should be reason enough to ask some critical questions. If these actions are divinely inspired and written, if they are blessed by whatever name you give your god; why then do not all believers of your faith act as one? If your deity is not powerful enough to foster unity amongst its believers, then how omnipotent are they? I’ve heard every answer you can possibly give me, I used to give the same answers myself.
Gods are inventions of men. Scripture is like clay, each person of faith can mold that clay until it fits them just right. You can use as much or as little of it as you need. You can fire the pieces you pick to make them stronger, while leaving the parts you don’t want to dry out and crumble. But like all things made of clay, even the pieces that you strengthen will crack and break when hit with enough pressure. My jar thankfully shattered to pieces after developing cracks over the years. Keep hanging on to yours, but know that non-theists will keep adding pressure. ~ Kim
